The list of what safety awards the 2016 Ford F-150 has won just got a little longer. The IIHS has named the F-150 SuperCrew and SuperCab models to its list of Top Safety Picks for 2016. The F-150 is the only full-size pickup truck to be named to the list.
By utilizing high strength steel in the frame and military-grade aluminum alloy in the body of the F-150, Ford has slimmed down the truck by almost 700 pounds. The lighter body is a significant reason why the 2016 model is the safest F-150 ever made. Using these components also helps improve the fuel economy of the truck, along with the towing and payload capacity numbers.
“We spent thousands of hours engineering, designing and developing multiple safety features that work together in the event of an accident.” -Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Global Product Development
F-150 small overlap front crash test score
One of the most difficult crash tests to pass is the IIHS small overlap front crash test. This test has proved difficult for many vehicles. The F-150 not only passed the small overlap front crash test, but earned the highest possible score. Several new design features have been developed with this test in mind. Specially designed wheel blockers work with lightweight nylon hinge pillar reinforcements to control crash forces and make the truck even safer. The test results prove how effective this strategy has been.
The 2016 Ford F-150 offers a slew of standard and available safety features. Trailer sway control and automatic crash notifications are standard on all models. Available safety features include the Ford MyKey system that allows parents to monitor valets and teen drivers, a rearview or surround-view camera, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alerts and lane departure warnings. The F-150 earned a five-star government crash test rating.
The Ford F-150 is America’s bestselling vehicle, and America has chosen well. This truck delivers on performance and safety in a way no other vehicle can.
